Wave 3
FFT Wave 3 is a 2-day rolling programme addressing both reading and writing and is designed to be delivered by experienced Teaching Assistants working one-to-one with a Year 1 or Year 2 child for 15-20 minutes a day, for 10-20 weeks, depending on the child's needs. The programme targets
children who do not have the skills to access ELS programmes.
The programme is included in the review of literacy intervention schemes compiled
by Greg Brooks in 'What Works for pupils with Literacy Difficulties': 3rd Edition
2007.
The FFT Wave 3 contribution to a layered approach to interventions is endorsed by
ECaR.
A three-day training for the Teaching Assistant plus the Class Teacher is required for anyone wishing to run the programme . A file accompanies the training.
Aims of training
- To give adults a deeper understanding of the needs of children who find reading and writing difficult.
- To provide a structure for individual teaching.
- To promote inclusion by enhancing Quality First Teaching.
Content of Training
Day 1 – Assessment procedures for early literacy including running records.
Day 2 – The reading process.
Day 3 – The writing process.
Each child's programme is based on the initial assessment and addresses skills and knowledge at word, sentence and text level. The aim is to help the child develop a range of independent reading and writing strategies.
Options to train as a trainer (LA personnel)
- A 3-day training at a central venue - ideal for LAs wishing to train one or two trainers.
- A 3-day training organised within an LA – ideal for LAs wishing to train a group of trainers or for neighbouring LAs to cluster together.
Other training options – to buy in an external trainer to train schools within an LA.
Accreditation is available through Edgehill University for any staff involved in training, delivering or supporting the programme.
