Hi Five
A reading and writing programme for pupils in Year 5+ working at a low level 2
Aims
- To develop independent reading and writing strategies.
- To develop speaking, listening and comprehension skills.
- To encourage study skills (predicting, clarifying, questioning, summarising) in preparation for Key Stage 3.
- To develop familiarisation with the features of different text types used in whole class teaching.
- To encourage editing as a natural part of the writing process and develop ways of learning words.
- To promote self esteem through enjoyment and improvement.
Delivery
A 10 week programme delivered for 20 minutes 4 times a week by a Teaching Assistant (3 times a week)
and class teacher (once a week) to groups of up to 3 pupils. The weekly four lesson structure includes
two reading and two writing lessons centred around one text (usually non-fiction). Each lesson is supported
with a wide range of resource materials encouraging the use of strategies to promote independence.
Impact
The results and feedback from pilot schools have been very positive. The London Borough of Bromley collated
results for 27 schools over a 10 week intervention period in the summer of 2007. The average sub level progress
of the pupils (which would usually be 1.5 sub levels in a year) was 2.4 sub levels in reading and 1.4 sub levels
in writing. A secondary school in York used the programme with a group of ten Year 7 pupils. Over a 9 week
intervention the average rate of progress was 14 months in reading accuracy and 11 months in reading comprehension
(Neale Analysis of Reading Ability).
Training
- A two day training course for schools provided by the Fischer Education Project(FEP) for teacher and teaching assistant.
- A one day course for local authority staff training to deliver the programme to their own schools.
