Firm Foundations Programme Summary

The Firm Foundations Programme consists of a series of 36 activity packs for Early Years settings, designed to support Communication, language and literacy. There will naturally be some overlap into other areas of learning.

Each activity pack contains all the necessary resources and an instruction leaflet that identifies the learning opportunities.

The packs were originally designed for parents to use at home. They enhance parents' understanding of children's learning and act as a vehicle to promote home/school dialogue.

They can also be used within a setting as a general resource - particularly useful for parent helpers, students, older children on PSE/citizenship initiatives etc.

The 36 activities cover 4 levels across 9 strands -auditory memory, sequencing pictures from nursery rhymes, auditory discrimination, positional language (spatial awareness), visual memory, visual discrimination, sequencing pictures of events, retelling narratives in the correct sequence and phonological awareness.

The programme includes a User's Guide with a CD of all the programme resources. It includes record keeping sheets, evaluation sheets for parents to complete, an overview of activities showing content and alignment to Stepping Stones/ELG, and general information leaflets for parents.

Updates showing alignment to EYFS will be included with the guide by Summer Term 2008.
