Introduction to FFT
This course is aimed at local Authority database users who are new to FFT data, or those who have some limited experience of FFT data but would like to reinforce
their existing knowledge.
Topics covered will include:
- Background to FFT, aims and ethos of the project.
- Estimates and value-added methodology.
- Understanding and using the FFT databases (Main database and Analysis to support Self-Evaluation).
- Understanding and using FFT Live 3.
- Understandning and interpreting FFT Reports (Database and FFT Live).
- Guidance Materials.
- Guidance materials.
- Training and Support.
- Future developments.
Please note this course is not aimed at experienced users who wish to further their understanding.

Inside the FFT Database
This is a specialised course, aimed at data-handlers within local authorities who are familiar with FFT models and reports, but who wish to use data in other applications, query the data, amend existing reports or create their own reports. It is not a course about learning how to use the database front-end to view and export reports. Instead, much of the time will be spent looking at and using the tables in the database. You will be expected to write Access queries and reports during the session, and so the course is aimed at Access users, rather than those who want to learn how to use Access. A working knowledge of VBA would be helpful but not essential.
The training course will cover:
- the content of the databases
- what data to extract from the database to create new reports
- which fields can be linked
- what data could be exported from the database for use within other packages
- how to write reports to present existing data in different ways, or to use other data from the database
We hope to run further courses in the coming months; Please email if you would like us to contact you when dates have been arranged.
Understanding FFT Statistical Models
This course is designed for LA staff who regularly use FFT data and would like to know more about the principles and statistics behind the FFT models,
the mechanics of FFT modelling techniques and of the models themselves. The workshop is designed to provide a solid understanding of the statistical
background to the FFT models, their rationale and application and to add value in informing discussion on pupil, school and LA performance. It is open
to technical sophisticates and less confident handlers of statistical information alike.
The course will provide:
- An appreciation of the development of important education and statistical indicators.
- A secure knowledge of the statistical 'terms and conditions' underpinning statistical models.
- Confidence to see how models of pupil and school performance work.
- Awareness of aspects that statistical models do not reach, and of the pitfalls that can trap the unwary in their use.
- An understanding of how pupil and school estimates have been constructed.
- An understanding of how FFT statistical models can be used more effectively for LA/school self evaluation and target setting.
